This year’s Midlands Fashion Designer Awards took place in the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens. On Friday 19 October 2012, the annual fashion awards, now in its 5th consecutive year, saw a turnout of 350 guests, all to celebrate the wealth of creative talent from across the region. Sponsored by Retail Birmingham, the awards offer a platform for emerging and independent Midland designers to gain exposure.
Out of 26 designers this year, Tamara Joseph won the Independent Designer of the Year Award, the Emerging Designer of the Year title went to Leicester based Sarika Pancholi and Alice Moore, a recent graduate from Coventry University, won the Young Designer Award. The winning designers have been offered a vacant retail unit in Birmingham City Centre, courtesy of Retail Birmingham. Retail Birmingham will actively promote the exhibit of the winning pieces.
The winning designers will also be showcasing pieces from their collections at the prestigious Midlands Business Awards, at the Metropole Hotel, NEC.
The judging panel consisted of of high-end womenswear designer – Gavin Douglas, the founding member of the Young British Designer and Managing Director at Rees Bradley Hepburn – Debra Hepburn, Kim Stephens from Retail Birmingham, Managing Director at Alan Sharman Agency – Alan Sharman, and Fashion Stylist and Journalist – Lizzy Gardner.
Tamara Joseph, winner of the Independent Designer Award said, ‘a big thank you goes to the MFDA team for their support throughout the year, from selecting the designers as finalists, to putting our names on a designer map. A big thank you to the judges for choosing me and my unorthodox couture collection, as Midlands Independent Designer of the year, I am aiming higher every day – ‘living the dream!’
Excited about her win, newly crowned Young Designer of the Year, Alice Moore, a recent fashion graduate from Coventry University said “I am absolutely over the moon and honoured to have been selected as Young Designer of the Year 2012! The event was amazing; a beautiful venue, great presenters, really professional and talented models, all of which created a beautiful platform for my designs”.
Models were transformed by hair sponsors Benjamin Ryan Hair & Beauty with make-up supplied by Young Blood Mineral Cosmetics and make up team lead by professional make-up artists Jules Cardozo-Marsh, Penny Grimley, Emma Hardware and Michelle Leandra.
The event raised £240.00 for Breast Cancer Research, with an additional £320.00 pledge through an auction at the event.
