Meet Mike Ferguson – Owner of Smithsonia
Unique gift and jewellery store Smithsonia began life in Harborne High Street in 1979 before relocating to the historic Piccadilly Arcade in 1982.
Upon moving to the arcade the store became so popular that it soon outgrew its initial unit at entrance of arcade. Thanks to its loyal customer base, Mike was able to extend the shop and significantly increase stock to the level that the shop operates today.
“We get great satisfaction when so many of our customers declare Smithsonia as their favourite shop in Birmingham…not just locals but international travellers who always come back to us when passing through Birmingham.”
The beautiful store sells silver handmade jewellery, handmade glass, limited edition bronzes that are all made in Birmingham, handmade clocks, pottery from Stoke on Trent, limited edition Quinton Blake prints and Tim Richards handmade architectural buildings to name only a few. Over 70% of the store’s stock is made in the UK.
Mike enjoys the challenge of searching for and stocking unusual items and trying new things that differentiate Smithsonia from larger chain stores.
“My best advice for independent retailers would be – work at it, keep it looking fresh, keep sourcing new product and stay positive.”
As part of the Celebration of Independents, Smithsonia is celebration 30 years of trading within the arcade with daily prize draws to win handmade gifts from UK craftsmen, complimentary bubbly and chocolates for customers and demonstrations from British jewellery designer Carrie Elspeth throughout the day on 2 July.
