How to make the most out of the Dino Trail in the city centre
Dinosaurs are taking over Birmingham city centre this Summer!
To celebrate the arrival of Dippy on Tour at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, we’ve created a BIG IN THE CITY Dino Trail, combining dinosaurs and our love of shopping to guide you around the city. Explore our five major department stores, shopping centres, independent boutiques, bars and eateries whilst having fun and learning about all the different types of dinosaurs.
Before you set off on your mission to find all 10 dinosaurs, we’ve complied a guide detailing how to make the most out of the Dino Trail. From where to eat and drink to all the key things to see and do to maximise the fun.
Step right into the luxury lifestyle shopping destination the Mailbox and come face to face with our spectacular Brachiosaurus, who will be lurking outside by the canals. This is the perfect excuse to take advantage of the glorious canal views. Plan your day and make a meal reservation at one of many buzzing restaurants located within the Mailbox, from Miller & Carter and Zizzi’s to Red Peppers and Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Once your hunger has been satisfied, head over to the stylish department store, Harvey Nichols to find exclusive brands such as Fenty Beauty, House 99 and Hourglass. Be sure to check out the Mailbox’s new homeware department on the ground floor featuring top interior names, Heal’s and MADE.com.
The spectatcular Tyrannosaurus Rex is hidden within Birmingham’s iconic department store Selfridges. We won’t tell you where you will find him as that’ll ruin the surprise, but whilst you’re there it’s a must that you participate in a spot of retail therapy. Comprising of four levels, there’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy. On level 1, your sense of smell will lead you to the Food Hall where you will discover eateries such as Rola Wala, Ed’s Diner, Yo Sushi and Gran Café by San Carlo. For shoe addicts, be sure to visit Level 4 for the department of shoes, featuring hundreds of designer brands and don’t forget to drop by Tiffany & Co. to swoon over their beautiful Tiffany diamonds!
Another one of our dinosaur family, the Stegosaurus can be spotted hanging out in the John Lewis department store located in Grand Central. Rome around and embrace the wide range of products this popular store has to offer. Get yourself a new Summer wardrobe with the help of John Lewis’ personal stylists by booking yourself a complimentary personal shopping session or why not give yourself some much needed TLC at their &Beauty & Clarins spa.
Great Western Arcade
This ever popular shopping area radiates Victorian charm, whilst exploring you’ll spot a rather charming little Coelophysis inside. There’s plenty to see and do in this arcade. We suggest grabbing yourself a freshly made baguette from Anderson & Hill and popping over to Loki to try one of the 72 wines on tap from their wine tasting machines. If you’re in the mood for a spot of retail therapy, there’s something for everyone in the arcade. Those who have a sweet tooth will relish a visit to Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe and Chouchoute Chocolaterie while accessory lovers will love the fashion statements available in Peter Forson and Glimpse.
Right in front of one of the independent arcades, say hello to the Stegosaurus! This is the perfect spot to recharge your batteries with a speciality coffee from Faculty Coffee made fresh with a slice of homemade cake from Sixteen Bakery. After you’re done we recommend popping over to Smithsonia and taking a look at all their quirky trinkets and gifts. If you’re looking for an alcoholic tipple or a slap-up meal, just a short walk up Temple Street and you’re in the heart of the dining quarter, with popular eateries such as Revolution De Cuba, Las Iguanas and The Ivy to name a few.
The Triceratops will be standing proud outside the city’s biggest bookshop, Waterstones on High Street. Why not explore the six floors of literature and lose yourself in your favourite book whilst enjoying a delicious hot cocoa in their cafe, relaxation at its best!
High Street (M&S)
Just a short walk away from the Triceratops, you’ll find the Allosaurus. On this street, you’ll find well-loved names such as Marks & Spencer, Pandora, Boots, Levi and Thornton’s so why not treat yourself to a staple pair of denim jeans or a brand new ring. If you love beauty, take a gander in Boots where you’ll find NYX Cosmetics, Clinique, Chanel, Estee Lauder and Benefit to name a few inside.
It won’t be just the metro trams you’ll see passing by on Corporation Street. The Velociraptor will be making an appearance just outside Urban Outfitters and there’s plenty of shopping to be done in this area, including the House of Fraser store with six floors of beauty, fashion, homeware and toys as well as a restaurant, café and bar.
Located on one of the busiest streets of Birmingham city centre, the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex stands proudly outside the Apple store. We recommend visiting the Apple store and admiring the beautiful Grade II building that used to house former Midlands bank. Situated on this street, you will find Primark, Oasis, Muji, Jack Wills and H&M amongst plenty of hospitality spots such as Byron, Bella Italia, Wildwood and ASK Italian. It’s the perfect destination for an afternoon of light retail therapy and lunch after you’ve completed the trail.
Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery
You will find the legendary Diplodocus in Victoria Square adjacent to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Here you will enjoy a stunning view of the Town Hall and Birmingham Council House, our recommendation for a perfect photo opportunity. A Diplodocus selfie with a perfect Brummie backdrop, perfect! It’s also a perfect opportunity to view the actual Dippy the Diplodocus from The National History Museum, showcasing at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in the Gas Hall. Tickets are available to book until the 9th Sept, grab your chance to see him before he leaves to continue his epic UK tour.
Did we mention you can also get the chance to win £500 worth of shopping vouchers to spend in our city centre? All you have to do is take a ‘dino-selfie’ with all 10 of our dinosaurs on the trail and upload them to Instagram and tag @ShoppinginBham using the hashtag #DippyOnTour.

We hope you all have a roaring fun time following the trail!
