Celebrate Birmingham’s diverse music scene at Selfridges
22.09.2017 - 01.10.2017
Birmingham’s leading department store is to jump to the beat when it hosts Live + Loud – its annual festival, which this year celebrates the city’s diverse and vibrant contribution to music.
The festival, which kicks off on September 22, comprises ten days of transformational music happenings in-store, including a live DJ set with Birmingham’s own Mike Skinner from The Streets, as well as live music sets with local DJs and unsigned artists, plus children’s events. Live + Loud also coincides with Birmingham Weekender, the bi-annual arts festival that features hundreds of free events.
Sam Watts, general manager of Selfridges Birmingham, said: “We’ve pulled out all the stops to stage what promises to be an exciting event that celebrates the eclectic and thrilling music scene in the city. We’ll be hosting a range of great sets throughout the store and there’ll also be a few surprises, too.”
During Live + Loud, Selfridge’s acclaimed food hall on the first level will host the breakout bandstand, which will see more than 20 up-and-coming bands from Birmingham perform, while other artists from the city will showcase their talents throughout the store.
Witness a bespoke piece of music being created from scratch when Selfridges Collab Sessions brings together two artists from different genres to produce a new track over five hours. There will be four collaborations – on September 23, 24, 30 and October 1 – and the artists will perform their new creation live on the Bandstand on level 1 at 4pm each day. Head to the store to see what the artists create – will street meet strings? Or will reggae meet rock?
Birmingham is world-renowned for leading the development of Bhangra – the Punjabi music and art movement – and to celebrate, Live + Loud is hosting a carnival-inspired party with live dancers and musicians on Sunday, September 24.
Les Commandos Percu will perform Les Interventions Mobile as part of the Clash of Drums sessions – which will snake through the store on the evening of Friday, September 22, performing an explosive set which will culminate in a pyrotechnic finale on the terrace. The complementary event will be an interactive experience, where spectators will be positively encouraged to participate.
SB.TV, whose YouTube channel has 10 million subscribers, is collaborating with Selfridges to create 0121, an art installation/pop-up radio studio on level 2. The live broadcasts between September 23 and 30 will be complete with artist appearances, performance space and conversation areas.
One of the main events of Live + Loud will be Beauty and the Beat – an exclusive experience for lovers of Selfridges Beauty Hall, when selected customers will be invited to attend a fun event that includes live DJ sets and a live band. Tickets cost £10, which are redeemable during the evening on beauty hall products.
